Role of a counsellor

If you are up for the challenge, working as a Camp counsellor will be the most rewarding of jobs as you will become a teacher, brother, sister, friend, mentor, supervisor and role model to the kids at camp. Wherever the kids are is where you will be.

Being a Camp counsellor is an extremely important job as you will be given the enormous responsibility of looking after another person's child.

It is a demanding role that requires you to be with campers' 24hrs a day for 8 – 15 weeks. It is your responsibility to ensure that campers attend activities; meal times and that they keep their sleep areas clean.

Camps hire three types of counsellors:
  • General Counsellors live with, supervise and organize activities for a specific group of campers. Camp USA does not accept applicants who are capable of working only as general counsellors, unless they are willing to go to special needs camps.
  • Specialty Counsellors teach specific activities such as tennis, ceramics or sailing. They may sleep in cabins with campers and perform general counsellor duties. Specialty counsellors may lead a variety of activities each day or teach one activity for the entire day.
  • Special Needs Counsellors work with campers of various ages who have a wide variety of disabilities. They may bathe or lift campers or assist with administering medication. Previous experience in this area is helpful but not required. Camps look for patient, energetic candidates who demonstrate a respect for the campers.
